CCA Schedule
Junyuan Primary School PE/CCA Department School’s CCA (Co-Curricular Activities) Policy 2009 Download the CCA Schedule for 2008 here

Rationale
The policy aims to clearly explain to staff, parents and pupils on the guidelines and stand the school takes with regards to CCA. CCA is defined as co-curricular activities that are organized by the school. The policy would highlight the systematic approach to every pupil’s CCA path from P1 to P6. It would also help parents and pupils see the link between CCA and the holistic development of the child. It can also be used as a guide to better plan their child’s time and the CCAs their child should take with regards to their development.

Background
CCA is an integral part of every pupil school curriculum. MOE’s emphasis on holistic education and the importance placed on CCA goes well together. CCA is as important as the academic subjects which pupils pursue and place emphasis on. It helps to instill self-discipline and desirable values as well as develop the leadership potential in every pupil. Apart from instilling discipline, it helps to develop talent and interest in non-academic areas.

By doing so, the school aims to develop an appreciation of the Arts and excellence in Sports making Junyuan a vibrant and a nurturing school. Therefore, the school would like to stress the importance it places on the development of every pupil through its various CCA programmes it has in place. The school will annually trace the development of the child in terms of attitude and performance in the CCAs the pupils are enrolled in through proper documentation which will used as records for future references to postings of higher learning eg. entrance into universities, junior colleges and secondary schools.

It therefore must be made clear to parents on how important CCAs are for their children and how they can use it to plan for their child’s development as they progress from Primary 1 to 6.

School CCA Programmes SHINE Programme 2009
Implemented in 2008, SHINE stands for SHaping INdividuals to Excel. The programme is catered specially for the Lower Primary pupils (P1 - P3). It aims to expose pupils to the Sports and Arts and impart survival skills such as Swimming to pupils. The programme aims to provide equal opportunities and exposure to all pupils to develop their talents. Pupils who are talented are further developed in the school's niche areas of dance and net games from P4 to P6. Last but not least, in true CCA Education spirit, the programmes planned under SHINE integrate the six character values of the school (R3ICH) into its programmes.

SHINE in Sports
As part of the school's drive to promote Net Games Excellence among its pupils, P1 - P3 pupils are exposed to Badminton during their CCA time for a term. It is taught progressively in 8 modules by badminton instructors certified by the Singapore Badminton Association. Pupils will be presented with certificates upon completing the modules in Primary 3.

SHINE in Aesthetics
Pupils are exposed to different genres of dance from ballet, jazz and latin dance to hip-hop. Taught by industry experts in the field, pupils are taught the basics of the the different genres through creative programmes such as Theatre Dance (P1), Ethnic Fusion Dance (P2) and Dance Discovery (P3). Pupils work in teams during CCA sessions to put up a concert featuring what they have learnt at the end of each module.

SHINE in Swimming
This is part of the PE programme and the school's effort in ensuring water safety among its pupils and equipping them with the necessary skills to progressively learn how to swim. Pupils should be able to swim confidently by the time they graduate from Junyuan.

CCA Programmes - P4 -P6
The school is offering a total of 22 CCAs for the year 2009. The CCAs are categorized into 4 groups. They are Sports & Games, Uniformed Groups, Cultural Activities and Clubs & Societies. Among the CCAs, some of them under the sub groups are also classified as Elective Modules. These are actually CCAs which run on a short term basis of 6 to 8 weeks. Elective Modules were created based on the interest levels of the pupils who want to pursue it to gain some knowledge about it.

Pupils who enroll in these CCAs will only be allowed to do so once. After which they will have to choose another elective module to try. To manage time properly, pupils are strongly discouraged from trying out two elective modules concurrently. Among the Sports & Games CCAs, some may be under the Talent Development scheme. Pupils enrolled in these CCAs are specially selected based on their ability and talent through various tests.

For example, for certain Sports & Games CCAs all Primary 3 and 4 pupils are tested in Term 1 on their psycho – motor skills and their suitability for the various sports under the scheme. The various sports are Sepak Takraw, Netball and Volleyball.

In the case of the Choir, pupils have to go through a voice test at Primary 3conducted by the Choir Master to determine their suitability. Upon joining these CCAs they will trained by qualified teachers, instructors and coaches to represent the school on a competitive level.

THAF
THAF stands for Total Health and Fitness. As part of the school’s drive towards a healthy and wholesome lifestyle the school stands firmly on promoting this belief to all pupils as well as staff. At the beginning of every year, the height and weight of every pupil across all levels are taken. Using a table provided by MOE, pupils are categorized as either being overweight, of acceptable weight or underweight.

Pupils who are overweight by above 120% of their actual weight will be strictly monitored by our THAF teachers. These teachers have specially designed programmes to help them eat right and exercise. These programmes are usually conducted either once or twice a week after or before school hours. This participation is compulsory especially for pupils who are exactly 120% and 130% above their normal weight. However if the child is 140% and above their normal weight, they would still be in the programme but need not turn up for the weekly activities.

If the pupil is involved in the weekly THAF activities, he/she will be acknowledged as having a CCA and is not required to participate in another CCA. However, if the pupil does wish to, he/she can still go ahead and join another CCA. On the other hand, if a 120% to 130% overweight child is already in a competitive Sports CCA, he/she need not attend the weekly THAF activities during the competitive tournament season.
