The Chinese Language Department adopts an integrated approach, which taps on various resources to help the pupils read, write and communicate effectively in the Chinese Language.
Teachers use innovative methods to enhance the learning of the Chinese Language. To keep abreast with the latest development in teaching, teachers would be attending courses and workshops regularly.
The Chinese Language Department has been focusing on programmes that will encourage reading and writing, and enhance our pedagogy in the teaching of Chinese Language (so that Chinese Language teachers will serve as effective facilitators in a pupil-centered learning environment).
CHINESE LANGUAGE PROGRAMMES
EXTENSIVE CHINESE LANGUAGE READING PROGRAMME
(Target Group : P1 - P6)
Objective
To expose pupils to more Chinese Language reading materials, so as to arouse their interest in Chinese Language.
Rationale
Most of the Chinese pupils do not have easy access to Chinese Language reading materials or are not expose to Chinese Language reading materials regularly, and the programme helps Chinese Language teachers and parents to expose the pupils Chinese Language reading materials weekly, which will help to arouse their interest in the language.
Approach & Deployment
All Chinese Language pupils are strongly encouraged to subscribe to the weekly magazines - P1 and P2: 'Hao Peng You'; P3 and P4: 'Zhi Shi Hua Bao'; P5 and P6: 'Zhi Shi Bao'. Chinese Language teachers would use 1 to 2 periods weekly to go through the contents of the magazine with their pupils.
HAPPY READING EXPRESS PROGRAMME
(Target Group : P2 - P4)
Objectives
To heighten pupils' interest in reading CL books. To inculcate good reading habits in pupils. To enhance pupils' Chinese Language competency.
Rationale
To help schools in their Teach Less Learn More (TLLM) journey, MOE has freed up part of CL curriculum to encourage schools to implement school-based curriculum to cater to the needs and ability of the pupils. Through greater curriculum customisation, it is hoped that teachers are able to better engage their students through learner-centred pedagogies and programmes. The implementation of school-based reading programme is in alignment with the thrust of new CL curriculum. It will go a long way to help inculcate good reading habit and enhance the language competency.
Approach & Deployment
P2 to P4 CL teachers would be using 2 periods weekly to conduct the reading programme. Other than going through the content of the selected books, teachers would also be conducting the following activities to enhance reading:
- Role Play / Show and Tell
- A self-designed story book
- Quiz
- Reading Passport
- Reading Portfolio
- Creative Writing (related to the stories read)
Pupils would get to showcase their reading projects - self-deisgned storybooks, creative writing works and reading portfolios, on platforms such as the 'E3 Cluster Happy Reading Express' website (http://www.e3happyreading.net).
CHINESE ART APPRECIATION PROGRAMME
(Target Group : P1 & P2)
Objective
To provide opporunities for the pupils to be exposed to and immersed in the Chinese Art and cultivates an interest in the Chinese language and culture.
Rationale
In line with the Chinese Language Department's vision of equipping pupils with linguistic skills to appreciate accumulated knowledge and wisdom contained in our cultural heritage, the department has embarked on the Chinese Art Appreciation Programme to help our puils have better knowledge of the Chinese language and culture.
Approach & Deployment
All P1 and P2 Chinese Language pupils would be attending Chinese calligraphy lessons dueing the Chinese Language curriculum time. The pupils will attend a weekly 1-hour session for 5 weeks. They will be taught the basic strokes used in Chinese Calligraphy.
