We are pleased to be one of the 40 pilot schools in 2010 involved in the Whole School Approach to Raising EL Proficiency and are committed to creating a strong and pervasive culture where everyone speaks good English!
 
STELLAR (P1-P4)
JYPS is a Phase 2 STELLAR (Strategies in the Teaching of the English Language Learning and Reading)school and it is now implemented up to P4. Central to the STELLAR programme is reading, and anchored through the wide variety of interesting stories, are the teaching of the various language skills. Through this programme, pupils have become avid readers and are more proficient, and confident, EL communicators.
 
Reading Programmes:
Reading Journey (P1)
This is a programmme to encourage our P1 pupils to read widely. Pupils read to our Parent Volunteers, complete a short and simple review based on the books that they have read and share them with the Parent Volunteers. These reading sessions have proven effective in promoting reading amongst our young ones. Reading sessions are conducted fortnightly during LIP periods in the library.
 
Reading Cards Programme (P1 and P2 )
This programme is implemented in P1 and P2. Pupils will read graded cards and answer short answer questions after that. This is done to inculcate independent reading and self learning in our pupils.
 
Guided Reading Programme (P3)
The objective of this programme is to get pupils to read a variety of genres and improve their reading comprehension skills through the various graded reading activities. The pupils will get to explore graded books from the Story World series and Literacy Essentials.
 
Literature Programme (P5)
This programme aims to inculcate the love of reading in our pupils and expose them to basic literary elements of the books like character study, theme exploration and plot development to help them develop their creative and critical thinking skills. Language activities such as vocabulary and grammar will also be explored in context. They will read books from award-winning authors like Fudge-Mania, Teacher's Pet and The Magic Paintbrush.The P5 pupils will read books of various genres such as Narnia, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Double Fudge, Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes and many more.
 
Book Flood (P1, P2, P4 and P5)
These levels have a set of books in every class to encourage every pupil to read widely and frequently.
 
Subscription to the Little Red Dot and Straits Times (P4, P5 and P6)
All P4 to P6 pupils will subscribe to the Little Red Dot, which is available only to schools. EL teachers will use the newspapers as a resource in creating forums for discussions. Pupils will also get to keep up with current issues and learn the language using authentic resources.
 
Oral Communication Programmes
Talking Point! (P1-P6)
Every Tuesday, EL teachers will spend 1 period discussing with pupils current events or NE issues using the newspapers as a resource. This will encourage pupils to be more forthcoming in voicing their opinions and builds confidence and self-esteem.
 
Co-Curricular Programme:
  • Speech and Drama Elective (P1 and P2)
P1 and P2 pupils will enjoy this 6-hour course tremendously as it will engage pupils through a variety of drama techniques to get pupils to be more confident communicators.
  • Storytelling Elective (P3 and P4)
P3 and P4 pupils will pick up important oracy skills through storytelling strategies in this elective. By the end of the elective, the pupils would be confident enough to put up a storytelling presentation for the class!
  • Presentation Skills Elective (P5)

P5 pupils will learn the basics of effective presentations - an essential life skills. They will put the skills learnt through the test when they present their project work to the class!

  • Communication Skills Elective (P6)
P6 pupils will learn effective communication skills to prepare them for early adulthood like handling interviews, making enquiries, etc with role playing as a strategy.
 
Writing Programmes
Modular Writing Package (P3-P6)
Every P3 to P6 pupil will go through the modular writing approach in the learning of EL. Writing skills are taught in a structured 2-year in-house programme (P3 to P4 and P5 to P6) so that the pupils' learning is progressive. This approach also takes into account the different learning abilities of our pupils, so the instruction is tailored to their needs.
 
Supportive Programmes
KidsRead (P1 and P2)
A collaborative project with the National Library Board, a group of pupils read together with parent volunteers. Parent volunteers are trained to carry out the structure programme and the activities are designed to arouse pupils' interest in reading and enhance their language learning experience.
 
Reading Support (P1-P4 )
This is a course for selected P1 to P4 pupils that focuses on phonics and basic reading comprehension to improve pupilsf reading skills and comprehension.
 
I-Read! Programme
Every P1 and P2 class will be given 5 I-Pens and several sets of books meant to support pupils who need extra help in reading. Harnessing the power of technology, pupils will find that the I-Pens are useful tools that will help them engage in independent reading and be more competent readers.
 
Enrichment Programmes
Enrichment Magazines for High-Ability Pupils

This is a course for selected P1 to P4 pupils that focuses on phonics and basic reading comprehension to improve pupilsf reading skills and comprehension.EL teachers will tap on supplementary reading resources like Adventure Box and National Geographic Explorer Magazines that HA pupils will be subscribing to to expand their repertoire of reading materials and use them to really explore the language and get them discussing about some of the issues raised in the articles.
